Me: The first one's for my dad. He's a former World War II pilot and my hero.
Tim: What's his name?
Me: Bruck.
Tim scrawls a personal message from one dad to another on the inside cover of Big Russ and Me, a memoir involving the relationship between a father and son.
Me: The second one's for my ex-boyfriend. I don't care how you sign it.
Tim (pausing to think): To a guy with poor judgment....
This exchange occurred approximately five years ago to the day. I know that because the book was a gift for my dad on Father's Day.
Rest in peace, Tim

You are so fortunate to have met him. I also have his book and came to know the kind of person he was. Wouldn't it be great if there were more people like him. I am devestated by his passing, grieve for his family and can't imagine this election without him. Thank you for mentioning him in your blog.
I've watched HOURS of coverage this weekend, and I'm glad I did. What a GREAT job NBC and MSBNC have done in helping those of use who admired him get to know him even better. I'm blown away by how much he loved life...and how he put that love into action to so many people whose lives he touched. It's a devastating loss.
If you didn't catch the Today show, watch it on your computer especially the interview with Matt Lauer and Luke Russert; keep a box of kleenex close by. What an amazing person we've lost.
I happened to wake up around 4 a.m. so I turned on MSNBC here in California and caught a lot of nice coverage, including some clips of Luke. Then I took your suggestion and watched the full interview on my computer. Wow. I was blown away. Here I'd been envisioning a lost boy, devastated and confused by the sudden tragedy, and there he was instead: poised, mature, full of his father's spirit and bringing comfort to those around him. Tim's friends kept saying it over and over, but we got to see the proof--Luke is definitely a son to be proud of (and a testament to what a great father Tim was).
